Just what are we coming to? Has the world gone mad?!? What is going one…? Brexit, the climate emergency, Xmas General Election, Black Friday… no – SHORTS!

Yes – shorts! More specifically the wearing of shorts by professional golfers during competitive matches. I just can’t believe it’s come to this – is nothing sacred? But happening it is, and sanctioned by the PGA no less. I feel the need to write a stiff letter!

Clearly, the judgement of the PGA has caused a stir and forces us traditionalists to re-think that most sacred of things – golfing etiquette. The golfing world will never be the same again…

How we do things – how things have always been done, is always open to judgement. Rarely do we welcome those judgements which call us to change the way things are done, except of course if we call ourselves ‘Christian’…

Walking the way of Jesus will always leave us open to judgement because our ultimate judge will be the Christ who is to come:

‘O come, thou Rod of Jesse, free – thine own from Satan’s tyranny’

In this season of Advent, as we begin again to foretell the story of salvation from its origins in the birth of Christ-child, we too will be open to judgement. The irony cannot be lost on many that one of the ways in which that judgement will be brought to bear will be in the mark of a X. That will not only be a judgement on those who receive our ‘X’ but moreover, as those who claim a faith in Christ, how we mark our ballot papers will be a judgement on us.

Maranatha! Come Lord Jesus.

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and to put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility; that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen
