Happy New Year!
As we leave behind the past year… and look ahead in hope to 2021, the Sofa Service opens with the prayer of St Teresa of Avila, ‘Nade te turbe – Let nothing disturb you’, performed by the Taize Community choir.
We move into the season of Epiphany with the story of the Visit of the Wise Men (Matthew Ch 2). A story we know well – journeying from the east following a star, gifts that tell of who this child is and will be… but also of the world into which he was born with its dark intrigues and intentions revealed in Herod. The ‘kings’ are wise to the ways of a fallen world and, having presented their gifts, do not go back to Herod but return home ‘by another road’.
Brian McClaren, a contemporary voice of progressive Christian spirituality, speaks of how ‘we make the road by walking’. We might understand this as how our life of faith is ‘in the making’ – it continues to grow, evolve, learn, change, emerge, and mature … in and through us.
How will we make the road ahead in 2021?
We continue to hold in our prayers Derrick Pope, Carrie Goddard, Charlie Gray, Beryl Garlick, Anne-Marie, Angie Portlock and Eloise.
God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
whose years never fail
and whose mercies are new each returning day:
let the radiance of your Spirit renew our lives,
warming our hearts and giving light to our minds;
that we may pass the coming year
in joyful obedience and firm faith;
through him who is the beginning and the end,
your Son, Christ our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
