Harbour Churches Newsletter 25th July

‘I am the way, the truth and the life.’

I have just come hot foot from the Birdham Primary School Yr. 6 Leavers Service. An intimate ‘bespoke’ service this year – just the Yr. 6 children and their parents/carers. Covid still….

Much was made of the fact that they were leaving one school and heading (‘transition’ is the buzz word) to another. We spoke – and prayed – for the next steps they would be taking and the journey ahead. We hoped they would not ‘leave behind’ the values that had formed them these past seven years, but that they would be young people bringing with them those Christian values of compassion, service and ‘fullness of life’.

I couldn’t help but reflect that this Sunday we celebrate the patron saint of Birdham Church – St James. His association has always been with those who are journeying –  pilgrim people.

We too have been on a journey – for we are that pilgrim people. Whilst we must leave the past behind if we are to grow through the present and embrace the future, we too need to treasure the tradition from which we have come and from which we will go.

Increasingly, I don’t think of a ‘new’ normal when it comes to the life of the Church.. What is ‘normal’ anyway for those of us who walk in the most extraordinary way of Jesus Christ – the way that leads to truth and life – life in all its fullness.

No, God is doing a new thing  – it is happening – can we see it? Let’s transition too….

Blessings on The Way

This Sunday 23rd July we meet for worship outdoors at St James, Birdham @ 10am.  This will be a Service of the Word in celebration of St James. However, we continue to offer a Covid secure 8am Holy Communion (BCP) each Sunday @ St Peter and St Paul, West Wittering and alternate weeks at St James, Birdham and St Nicholas. Itchenor – this Sunday at Itchenor. You no longer need to book for these services.

Jonathan will lead our worship and Susan will be preaching. Our bible focus this Sunday will be Esther 9:20-22. We will be reflecting on the story of Esther and explore what we can discover about building up ‘community’ as we build up God’s Kingdom.

There will be a ‘Sofa Service’ this week and the link will be available on Saturday. Morning and Night prayer is available for anyone who wishes to join daily or just every so often.

The Collect for St James the Apostle:

Merciful God,
whose holy apostle Saint James,
leaving his father and all that he had,
was obedient to the calling of your Son Jesus Christ
and followed him even to death:
help us, forsaking the false attractions of the world,
to be ready at all times to answer your call without delay;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
