Well I suppose I better mention the football, but you all know what the result was so I shall leave it at that and continue…
Before I was accepted for Training as a Reader I had to undergo several intensive interviews; it was more thorough than my Viva for my PhD! One of the many questions was about my prayer life and I confessed with some embarrassment that my prayer life was not very good. However honesty was what was required and so I was accepted for the three year theology degree to train as a Licensed Lay Reader.
Now the Rector has asked me to be the ‘Prayer Champion’ for the Ministry team and Benefice it seems God had a plan that I was unaware of, but that is the life of faith in all its fullness.
And yes I have explored all kinds of praying, read many books on prayer, experienced the highs and lows of prayer and probably made more failed attempts at talking to God than I dare confess. However I am more convinced than ever that getting prayer right for ourselves as individuals and as the church, the corporate Body of Christ, is more important than anything else.
Hence this Week of Guided Prayer we are holding in the Benefice in September (16th-21st) and some more special prayer days planned in October and November.
Please consider taking part, it is just 1 hour a day for 5 days (half an hour of private personal prayer time and half an hour talking with your Prayer Guide who will give you ideas and prayer ‘starters’), at times to suit you. We will have Prayer Guides from across the diocese to support you and 3 ‘Prayer map walks’ around our villages. We have a prayer team in place to pray for everyone taking part and we know God will provide all the inspiration required.
We start with worship and refreshment on Sunday 16th September 3pm and a chance to meet your Prayer Guide, this will be at St. James Church Birdham. Midweek we shall have a Thanksgiving Eucharist at 10am at St. Peter and St. Paul West Wittering, Wednesday 19th September and a final get together at St. Nicholas Itchenor 5pm on Friday 21st September. The idea is that you don’t expect to see your prayer guide again, it won’t be someone you know and everything is kept in strictest confidence and so you can feel free to express your questions, thoughts, frustrations, delights etc.
Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: graft in our hearts the love of your name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and of your great mercy keep us in the same; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
We continue to pray for:
Clemmie, Peter Barnett and Michael Palmer
And those who have recently died and their loved ones:
Donald Emerick, Marjorie Morgan and Carolyn Hughes
We add Grace Wilmot to our prayers as she is baptised at Birdham on Sunday.
If you know of anyone who needs our prayers or would appreciate a visit, please let the Rector or the Parish Administrator know.
Should you wish to contact the Rector his mobile number is 07538 011579.
